ADULT FALL CLASSES
Adult classes begin the week of September 8, 2008 and meet once a week for 8 weeks. Classes end on Saturday, November 1, 2008. Class fees are applied to studio, equipment, and administrative costs. Students provide their own individual art materials.

 

DRAWING

Drop-In Figure Drawing
Monday, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Tuition:  $12/class or $64 for all 8 weeks
If you are looking for more practice with the figure this class is for you! Each week we will have a nude  or clothed model for students. Designed for the independent and experienced student. Students as a group decide on poses. Minimum 6 students. 

Drawing and Mixed Media Arts (All Levels)

Are you interested in drawing, but also have ideas for photos, collage, prints or painting?   Have you ever thought about combining them all?  Students will learn techniques in drawing to gain confidence while exploring new territory in various mediums. Chinese Brush Painting Techniques

Discover the beauty of simple brush strokes. Learn to paint flowers, plants, birds and fish in this introduction to Chinese brush painting. This course will introduce basic strokes and approaches to composition which make this art style unique. No experience is required as the instructor leads you through simple exercises and provides many examples of this beautiful and relaxing art form.

Always wanted to draw, but never knew where to begin? This class is designed for all levels and focuses in on improving skills and techniques. Students will improve their sighting and drawing skills using the studio still life, landscape, and exercises from "Drawing on the Right Side of The Brain." Pencils, graphite, charcoal, and pastel will be used. Personal enrichment will be the goal. Come and learn a new skill or enhance an old one!

Discover the excitement of creating vibrant landscape paintings using the powerful and popular medium of soft pastels. This is a complete oil painting class with unlimited scope.  Your imagination provides the only parameters!  Open to beginners needing basics to experience painters wanting to personalize their styles. Oil Painting Traditional to Modern - All Levels

Dive in to oil paints at any level in this independent, laid back atmosphere. Students will explore color and paint application and how it relates to realism, perception and emotion. Technical aspects of color, pattern, texture, composition, line, weight, and depth will be covered. Students should come with ideas and be ready to ask questions. Think watercolor is too difficult a media?  It's Easy!  With a few
instructions watercolor can become your favorite medium.  In this class you will learn what brushes are best, what colors to mix, what papers to use and basic
composition.  Adding Feng Shui (pronounced fung shway) the ancient Chinese philosophy of how life's objects interact and influence your artistic energy flow and watercolor painting will become easy!

An evening class for the beginning watercolor student. Each session will include a demonstration by the instructor and student practice. With a simplified approach, students will learn how to build their painting skills from single to multiple washes and will acquire the understanding of other basic watercolor techniques.

Transitional Watercolor - Finding Your Style: Intermediate/Advanced

Class will provide instruction and studio time for the student who already has an understanding of watercolor. Focus will be on advancement of students' artwork by developing their ideas and techniques. Demos will focus on the transition from idea to image, principles of composition, and design. Please bring supplies to the first class.

Digital Photography and Photoshop

Want to learn how to use your digital camera and optimize your images using Adobe Photoshop? This class is for you! Understanding how to use your digital camera is the key to creating great and memorable photographs. This class will take students from start to finish, instructing them in how to optimize importing, elegantly retouching, skillfully manipulating, and lastly to create a stunning print using photoshop.  You may not restore your entire family album, but you will walk away with the knowledge and capability of where to  begin.  

Black and White Photography: Beginner

This class demonstrates the art of black and white photography from the basics of camera handling, film processing, and print processing, as well as an introduction to pinhole photography and the plastic camera.  Students are encouraged to develop their artistic abilities.  Class fee includes the use of chemicals. No experience is necessary.

This class provides a look into the history of photography, from both a technical and artistic standpoint. The advanced and intermediate student will be provided with additional knowledge on exposure, processing of film, and printing based on students experience. A concentrated look at how to create a finished series of photographs will be given. Class fee includes use of chemicals.

Knit it Up with a Friend!

Whether you are a beginner or someone with a little more experience, join our knitting group and move your knitting to a new level. For the novice, learn the six basic skills of knitting and explore all the projects you can create! If you are tired of scarves, get inspiration and learn new techniques and tips as well as getting help with projects you may already have started. Class size is limited so register early! Yarn and needles provided to knit with in class, until you settle on a project and can choose your own yarn. Men and women welcomed! Minimum 6 students. 

Weaving for Beginners and Intermediate

The class for the individual who wants to learn about the art of weaving using traditional techniques. Students will work on projects of their own design, with encouragement to advance to multi-shaft structures.  One-on-one consultation on warp set, materials, pattern structure, etc., will be provided.

Spinning: Make Your Own Yarn

For beginning students and those who want to add to their skills.  Students will learn at their own speed.  All facets of wool preparation, i.e. washing, carding, spinning, and plying will be covered as well as discussion regarding uses for the finished spun yarn.  Use of exotic fiber, dying, and "designer" yarn production will also be discussed and investigated. Learn to make you own yarn for knitting and so much more. Some materials will be made available to students.  Enrollment is limited to 5.

 

CERAMICS
Class fee for all Ceramics classes includes glaze and firings in keeping with average student production. Students generating work in great excess of the average may be subject to an additional firing fee.

Mud Slingers Pottery

Explore the versatility of clay in this course that fuses wheel thrown and hand built techniques. Designed for students of all levels and abilities, a variety of construction, decoration, and glazing approaches will be learned through demonstrations, studio time, and critique sessions. Basic Pottery and Beyond

Beginning students are welcome to this class of clay exploration. Students will learn basic ceramic skills, such as hand building techniques, mastering throwing on the wheel, and decoration and glazing techniques. Beginning and intermediate students will develop skills in both hand building and on the potter's wheel. Do you enjoy making ceramic objects and like to have fun while doing it?  If so this is the class for you.  Come make work in a relaxing fun studio atmosphere.  This class is designed to improve your ceramic skills in different areas.  Weekly demos will be given exploring different wheel throwing techniques.  Special emphasis will be given to trimming. Students are welcome to sign up for this class and work independently in the studio during class time. One 25lb bag of clay included.

Thursday Morning Potters

This class if for the beginner as well as the advanced student. Beginning students will explore variety of clay forming techniques: pinching, coiling, slab building, and the potter's wheel. Glaze techniques will also be demonstrated.  Advanced students will continue to pursue and develop their personal direction in clay.  Demonstrations and advice provided when needed or requested. Join the club and become a regular! One 25lb bag of clay included.

 

JEWELRY

Discover the creative possibilities of jewelry making. Learn the construction techniques of simple stone setting, metal forming, soldering and texturing. Apply your new skills in exciting and innovative ways. Design and make rings, brooches, cuff links, necklaces or  simple small sculptural forms. Be creative and develop a unique personal style. Enrollment is limited to 10.
If class exceeds limit, another beginning class will be opened on Monday. Class fee includes fuel for torches, solder, flux, and pickling. Metal is additional.

WRITING \ ART HISTORY


Discussions in Modern Art History

Students will investigate and learn about the rise of modern art in the 20th Century through slide lectures and discussions in a relaxed conversational atmosphere. From Picasso to Andy Warhol, into present day, students will explore movements such as Dada, Surrealism, Expressionism, Minimalism, Pop Art and contemporary trends within the art world. Anyone interested in making art will expand their horizons with more knowledge on how modern art has helped to shape international culture and style.

Creative Writing: The Art of the Story

Love to read and often think of writing your own masterpiece? Or maybe you just want to try something new? Join us, and learn the art of creative writing.  Through a combination of group and individual in-class exercises, we will explore ways to generate ideas and develop them into compelling literary works.  We will read and discuss samples in class. Students are encouraged to bring works-in-progress. All levels welcomed!

Kitchen table not working so well as a studio? Don't have time to take a class? Looking to meet other artists? Then maybe an open studio session is for you! For half of the tuition cost of taking a class plus the relevant class fee, you can work at your own pace. The studios are available to enrolled students during regular museum hours, as long as a class is not going on in the desired space. Certain areas (photography, ceramics, jewelry) require previous enrollment in a class, and availability is limited. Call for more information or to register today!

Projects are fired then glazed and painted.  This is a wonderful time for parent and child to spend together.

Family Clay: Treasures (Family, ages 6 and up)

Fee covers parent and child. Additional children $40. 

Create family treasures using clay.  Project ideas may include frames, planters, or serving dishes and anything your imagination can dream. Instruction will be given on how to hand build to create these precious gems as a family.  Families can expect to complete one large project and several smaller. Emphasis will be on building projects together.
